History
Gammon Theological Seminary had its beginning as Gammon School of Theology, first as a department of religion and philosophy at Clark University for the 1869-1870 academic year. In February 1872, Clark Theological Seminary was opened with 26 students.

Gammon Theological Seminary was founded in 1883 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. Gammon is The United Methodist component of a consortium of six historical African American theological schools, The Interdenominational Theological Center.

Gammon/ITC is a co-educational, professional graduate school of theology. Its faculty personifies vigorous scholarship, rigorous academic discipline, and significant research in the service of the church and other communities in the world. It is the world’s premier resource for black church scholarship and faith-based solutions to the spiritual and socioeconomic challenges confronting the African-American community.

The interdisciplinary course offerings offer a holistic educational experience, integrating theological studies with preparation for the ministry. The institution’s longstanding scholar/minister tradition prepares students for preaching, teaching, and a range of other roles in church and society. The institution’s 160 courses fall into four major areas of study: biblical studies and languages; philosophy, theology, ethics, and history; persons, society, and culture; and the church and its mission.

Gammon offers the following degree programs: Master of Divinity; Master of Arts in Christian Education; Master of Arts in Church Music; Master of Arts in Christian Education and Master of Divinity; Master of Arts in Church Music and Master of Divinity; Master of Arts in Church Music and Master of Arts in Christian Education; Master of Divinity and Master of Public Health; Doctor of Ministry; and Doctor of Theology in Pastoral Counseling.

Gammon/ITC is fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school is a member of the Atlanta Theological Association, among other organizations, and maintains cross-registration arrangements with Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Clark Atlanta University, Columbia Theological Seminary, and Morehouse School of Medicine.
